Paradoxes of the Roast
The
roast is a strange art form, and a delicate balance. If the insult comic doesn’t
do her job, then the audience is bored; if she does, then they’re offended. Her
job is to make the audience regret hiring her for the job.
Televised roasts are stranger still, for there are two
audiences; the meat-space audience being roasted, and the cyberspace audience
inhaling the fumes. Sometimes the insult comic plays to audience 2 at the
expense of audience 1; that’s when audience 1 complains.
