Monster names for hurricanes: a modest proposal

          Dear National Weather Service:

I write to propose a new system for naming hurricanes. Instead of giving hurricanes ordinary people’s names, I propose that hurricanes be given the names of deadly monsters and villains of myth, legend, and fiction. Category names (Vampire) are okay, and so are individual names (Dracula, Lestat). No names of actual people, living or dead.

This is to avoid insulting ordinary folk by accident, and also to dramatize the dangers of hurricanes. Which would people rather flee from: Hurricane George or Hurricane Godzilla?

Attached find a list of names of monsters and villains. Feel free to add to this list. My thanks to GD Nordley, Barbara Berman, and Leslie Fish, for their suggestions.

  1. What will Romanians think? Vlad Tepes has undergone a substantial rehabilitation among them, even if Dracula isn't a precise rendering of his name. And what of Ming dynasty loyalists?
